Steering
Committee Finalizes Plan for Implementing New Operating Structure
At its Summer Meeting held August 28 in Eastman, Georgia, FoodPAC’s Steering Committee
finalized a plan for implementing its new operating structure. Under this new operating
structure, the Steering Committee will be composed of one representative from each
of the following industry sectors:
- Poultry
- Aquaculture/Seafood
- Bakery
- Dairy
- Fruit and Vegetable
- Meat Processing
- Processed Foods
- Equipment/Supply
- Grain/Oilseed Milling
Nuts
- Beverage
- Snacks/Confectionery
In addition, five
at-large positions will be filled from allied professions including, but not limited
to:
- Utilities
- Economic Development
- Private Consultants
- Retail Grocery
- Food/Ingredient Broker
- Foodservice
- Food Distribution
The three Technical
Committees will also broaden their membership to mirror that of the Steering Committee
with regard to industry diversity and representation. However, unlike the Steering
Committee, the Technical Committee may have up to three representatives from any
one industry group should the committee be unable to achieve its goal of diverse
representation from all desired sectors.
The roles of the Technical and Steering Committees are different. Technical Committee
members are focused primarily on establishing research priorities within a focus
area, reviewing submitted proposals for funding merit, and evaluating the technical
progress being made by funded research efforts. Steering Committee members are focused
more on ensuring there is reasonable funding balance between technical areas and
industry sectors in the approved research plan submitted to the governor, that there
is a strategic plan being pursued, and other executive actions.
The Nomination Committee is currently seeking nominations.
At the meeting, the Steering Committee also unanimously agreed to petition the Governor’s
Office of Planning and Budget to request line item funding in the amount of $300,000,
of which $150,000 would be used for the ongoing indexing study and $150,000 would
be used to continue feasibility studies for fruit and vegetable cooperatives on an
ongoing basis. Members also appointed the Executive Committee to investigate funding
opportunities with the W.K. Kellogg Foundation’s Food Systems Higher Education-Community
Partnership Program. This program is thought to correlate with the fruit and vegetable
special initiative.
