Ammonia Refrigeration Training Institute Offers First Classes

ammonia refrigerationLanier Tech’s Ammonia Refrigeration Training Institute began holding twice monthly offerings of its Industrial Ammonia Refrigeration Operator I training class this past March. To date, more than 25 students have received ammonia refrigeration operator certificates.

The training class is designed to provide the industrial ammonia refrigeration operator with the theory and practical knowledge required to successfully operate today’s more sophisticated and demanding systems. The class consists of two sections: a three-day, 24-hour classroom session followed by a 16-hour hands-on laboratory session. Topics covered include safety, pressure and force, noncondensable gases and purging, lubricants and filtration, properties of refrigerants, condensers, compressor types and operation, cooling units, and basic refrigeration hot gas defrost.

The ammonia refrigeration operator training program is the first of its kind to be offered in the Southeast and was developed in cooperation with the Georgia Institute of Technology, the Refrigerating Engineers & Technicians Association, and the International Institute of Ammonia Refrigeration. Located on the campus of Lanier Technical College in Oakwood, Georgia, the program occupies a 5,000-square-foot training facility and has received more than $1.5 million in building and equipment donations. Additional funding was provided by the Georgia Traditional Industries Program and the Georgia Department of Technical and Adult Education.

For more information, contact John Sherrill, ammonia refrigeration training coordinator, at (770) 531-2565 or sherrill@lanier.tec.ga.us. For a complete listing of upcoming class offerings and registration information, visit http://www.garpltc.com.
